about us

Zulu Overland is a family run business that operates from our apple farm in Grabouw, 80 km from Cape Town in the beautiful Elgin Valley. We started with one overland truck in 1999 and now run five trucks and a 10 seater Land Cruiser. We also specialize in adventure bike trips, putting up tented camps, weddings and catering anywhere. You will see our trucks on back up operations in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and now lately in Angola. As our advertisement ‘by word of mouth’ has kept us fairly busy over the last few years, we do not intend to expand our business in order to satisfy our clients and maintain a high standard of service.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND ZULU OVERLAND

HENK...
grew up in the house of a missionary. His dad was involved in working for the church in the Norhern Cape, Freestate, Koue Bokkeveld and Malawi and Mozambique. He studied agriculture and then became a Biology teacher for five years. While teaching he became involved in the outdoor education and was for two years nominated as one of the top ten teachers in outdoor education of the organization in South Africa. He was also heavily involved in off shore fishing and was a host skipper for the tuna nationals and other competitions for eight years. Came to the farm in 1990 but also got involved with charity work through Round Table. In 2000 he was voted tabler of the year in South Africa. The overland business was born because of this passion to share nature and friends with other people. His knowledge of Namibia was through his involvement in the war there in the early eighties and having done more than thirty trips through Namibia even before the overland business was started. Anybody who has been on a tour with, or have just met him will be aware of his love for pleasing people. Not a good business man though.

MARYKE...
grew up in a doctor’s house and went on to study for her degree at Stellenbosch university. Sport was her thing at school where she played netball for the SA Schools Team, she also represented Boland in tennis. She taught for almost 11 years before she got involved in her real passion, art. She now does art with food. She is the main brain behind our catering on trips and on the farm for which she became very popular. She is also in control of our base on the farm.
